Let’s be honest. The Affordable Care Act came from a good place. It made it possible for people with preexisting conditions to finally get coverage. It expanded Medicaid. It gave young adults a break by letting them stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26. It opened the door for lower-income folks to access health plans they could not dream of affording before. But what happened next? Private insurance companies hijacked the whole thing.
The plans are confusing, the deductibles are sky high, and the out-of-pocket costs are enough to make you skip care altogether. Bronze, Silver, Gold, what does it even matter when none of them actually make healthcare affordable?
Now we are facing something even worse. As of November 2025, the Premium Tax Credits that helped people afford marketplace plans are about to expire on December 31. These credits were the backbone of what made ACA healthcare plans even remotely usable. And the current government administration has made it clear they do not support extending them. If these tax credits disappear, we are going to see millions of people priced out of coverage again.
We are talking about hard-working families, freelance workers, self-employed folks, and people who do not qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private insurance without help. With the political climate the way it is, the silence around this issue is disturbing. It is not just a policy deadline. It is a life-or-death matter for a lot of people. Without these subsidies, the marketplace turns into a playground for the rich.
Meanwhile, European countries and Canada make sure their citizens get healthcare without going bankrupt. Their governments view healthcare as a basic human right. Here in the United States, it is a calculated gamble. One illness, one injury, one unexpected scan, and suddenly your entire paycheck is feeding the insurance machine. The ACA law was a start, not a solution. And if we let these tax credits expire, we are not just going backward, but are telling millions of Americans they are on their own again.
